Under the revised airport network plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, Tho Chu Airport will be built to ICAO Category 4C standards and cover more than 234 hectares.
The airport is expected to handle around 20,000 passengers annually by 2030, with capacity projected to rise to about one million passengers a year by 2050.
The ministry said Vietnam aims to expand its airport network to 32 airports by 2030, including 15 international and 17 domestic facilities. The number is projected to rise to 35 airports by 2050.

Land allocated for airport infrastructure nationwide by 2030 is expected to total about 26,025 hectares, while investment demand for the sector is estimated at around VND 514 trillion. Funding is expected to come from the state budget, private investors and other legal financing sources.
Other provisions of the airport development plan remain unchanged under a decision issued by the prime minister in June 2023 and subsequent adjustments by the construction ministry.
Alongside the Tho Chu project, An Giang is home to Phu Quoc International Airport and Rach Gia Airport.
Phu Quoc International Airport is undergoing a major expansion ahead of the 2027 APEC summit, with its planned area set to more than double to over 1,050 hectares.
The first phase is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2027 to accommodate international delegations, while the second phase is expected to continue after 2030.
Under the long-term plan, Phu Quoc aims to raise annual capacity to 50 million passengers by 2050, up sharply from its current capacity of four million passengers.
Rach Gia Airport, built in 1979 and currently capable of handling ATR 72 aircraft and around 200,000 passengers annually, is also set for upgrades.
Under the approved plan, the airport will be upgraded to ICAO Category 4C standards, with projected capacity rising to around 500,000 passengers annually by 2030 and one million by 2050.
