Authorities in Dong Nai Province said the extension would begin at S0 Station in Tan Van, cross the Dong Nai River and run along National Highway 1 to SC Station, the province’s new administrative hub.
From there, the line would follow the planned Bien Hoa, Long Thanh railway corridor on DT.771, cross the HCM City, Long Thanh, Dau Giay Expressway and reach SA Station.
The final 7.1 km would run directly into Long Thanh International Airport on a new alignment parallel to the future Thu Thiem, Long Thanh metro and the North, South high-speed railway.
The project has an estimated cost of VND 60.261 trillion (approximately USD 2.29 billion), including more than VND 4.323 trillion (approximately USD 164 million) for land clearance and resettlement. Implementation is slated for 2025 to 2029.
The Dong Nai People’s Committee said transport links between the province and HCM City still depend heavily on roads, which face worsening congestion on key routes such as national highways 1 and 51.
Despite recent investments in ring roads, expressways and regional link projects, capacity remains insufficient, particularly as Long Thanh International Airport prepares to enter service.
Improved connectivity between Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports is essential for dual airport operations, the committee noted, with Long Thanh expected to handle part of Tan Son Nhat’s passenger and cargo demand once it opens.
