The survey covering 17,500 victims at the hospital revealed that men accounted for 72.5% of the total number of victims, with accidents mostly involving motorbikes. In addition 88% of victims were hospitalised due to brain injuries. The run up to Tet and national holidays saw the highest number of accidents.

Nguyen Ngoc Tuong, Deputy Head of Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Safety Special Committee, said most of traffic accidents were due to bad traffic awareness and involved driving while under the influence of alcohol, in the wrong lanes or while speeding.

In the first nine months of this year, Vietnam witnessed more than 23,600 traffic accidents, killing 6,900 people and injuring thousands of people.

Dr. Duong Minh Man said Cho Ray Hospital alone saw roughly 30,000 traffic accidents, with two thirds of them suffering from brain injuries. Every week, around 100 patients at the hospital die in traffic accidents.

“The situation is similar to a jumbo jet carrying hundreds of passengers falling at Cho Ray Hospital,” he said.
