The Mekong Delta region of Vietnam is expected to have 250 urban areas by 2020, according to a construction plan.

Construction plan of Mekong Delta

The Ministry of Construction has announced the prime minister’s decision for the long-term construction plan of Mekong Delta region by 2020.

Under the plan that stretches to 2050, the region will have 250 urban areas, including Can Tho, My Tho, Long Xuyen, Rach Gia, Soc Trang, Ca Mau and Tan An with Can Tho being the first-class urban area.

According to Southern Sub-Institute for Urban Rural Planning, Mekong Delta’s total population will could reach 21 million by 2020, and up to 32 million by 2050.

The plan includes a development model that would make the region a centre for agriculture, tourism, agro-forestry and fisheries.

The region is comprised of 13 cities and provinces, and has a natural area of 40,604 square kilometres and a coastline of over 700 square kilometres.

Mekong Delta, which is the country\'s largest rice granary and aquaculture region, produces about 50% of country\'s rice output and 52% of aquatic products. However, it still lags behind in attracting investment compared to many other areas nationwide. This is partially due to its weak infrastructure system.

Therefore, infrastructure development in the region is among Vietnam’s top priorities. Between 2006 and 2010, the region accounted for one third of the country’s infrastructure projects funded by state-owned companies.

Many other major projects, such as Phu Quoc Airport, Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway and Co Chien Bridge, are under construction in the region.
