Long Thanh International Airport is planned to receive first three official flights on December 19.
Long Thanh International Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai will receive its first three official flights operated by Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways departing from Hanoi on December 19, according to Airports Corporation of Vietnam.
Nguyen Tien Viet, deputy general director of Airports Corporation of Vietnam, said the milestone would follow a technical test flight scheduled for December 15.
The test flight, numbered VN5001 and operated with a Boeing 787 aircraft, will depart Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City at 3 pm and land at Long Thanh at 3.40 pm.
The aircraft will later become the first to take off from Long Thanh, departing at 6 pm as flight VN5002 and returning to Tan Son Nhat at 6.40 pm the same day.
Viet said key facilities, including the runway, apron, air traffic control tower and technical systems, as well as preparations for the inauguration ceremony, are largely complete.
During a site visit on December 14, prime minister Pham Minh Chinh praised accelerated progress and urged round-the-clock construction to ensure quality and safety, calling on the ministry of national defence to be ready to provide additional personnel if required.
The first phase of Long Thanh International Airport covers 1,810 hectares. Construction began on January 5, 2021, with a designed capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo a year.
Most major components have been completed, with calibration and test flights conducted from late September to late October. The airport is expected to begin commercial operations in mid-2026.
