Large fake perfume production ring busted in Can Tho

Police in Can Tho have dismantled a large operation producing and trading counterfeit perfumes bearing well-known international brands, seizing thousands of fake products and production materials.

On January 6, officers from the Can Tho Police’s Economic Crime Unit, working with local surveillance officials, carried out emergency searches at three locations in Thanh An Commune identified as sites for manufacturing, storage and distribution.

Police said the operation was run by a 52-year-old man and his 41-year-old wife.

Colonel Bui Duc An, deputy director of the Can Tho Police Department, was present to direct the searches and oversee questioning of the suspects.

Authorities seized more than 1,200 bottles and boxes of finished counterfeit perfumes bearing brands including Coco Chanel, Dior, Allure, Acqua di Gio and Le Labo, along with more than 130 litres of pre-mixed fragrance liquid.

They also confiscated large quantities of materials and equipment, including 646 kilogrammes of packaging, more than 12,400 empty bottles, over 18,000 labels and four bottling machines.

During questioning, the couple admitted they began producing fake perfumes in 2020. Investigators said the husband had established HALOVA Co Ltd in 2018 as a front, registering perfume manufacturing under his own brands to disguise the illegal operation.

Police said bottles, caps, packaging, labels and fragrance chemicals were sourced from markets in Ho Chi Minh City and via social media. Machinery and materials had recently been moved to private homes in Thanh An Commune in an attempt to evade detection.

The case remains under investigation, with police urging consumers to stay vigilant and report suspected violations ahead of the Lunar New Year, or Tet, shopping season.
