The Khanh Hoa Hydro Meteorological Station said heavy rain, including very intense downpours and thunderstorms, is expected from the night of December 9 through the morning of December 11.

Total rainfall is forecast at 50 to 120 millimetres, with some areas receiving more than 150 millimetres. Authorities warned of rainfall exceeding 80 millimetres within three hours, accompanied by possible tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts.

Heavy rain could cause flooding in low lying and urban areas, as well as landslides in mountainous regions with unstable geological conditions. Strong winds may also damage roofs, fell trees and threaten the safety of people and livestock.

Over the next 24 to 48 hours, rivers across Khanh Hoa may rise, with flood peaks reaching warning level one and, in some river basins, approaching level two.

Local wards and communes have been instructed to closely monitor weather updates, warn residents and implement preventive measures. Authorities will deploy personnel to secure high risk areas, regulate traffic and ensure key routes remain open during heavy rain.

A report by the Khanh Hoa People’s Committee said historic floods in mid November killed 22 people, damaged or destroyed more than 1,000 houses and caused severe losses to infrastructure and agriculture. Total damage is estimated at more than VND 5 trillion (approximately USD 189.4 million), excluding household losses.

The National Centre for Hydro Meteorological Forecasting said that through December 10, Thua Thien Hue and the south central coast are expected to receive 50 to 100 millimetres of rain, with isolated areas exceeding 200 millimetres.

The Central Highlands and southern regions will see scattered showers of 10 to 30 millimetres, with some locations above 80 millimetres. From December 10 to December 12, southern localities may face moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, raising the risk of flooding in low lying areas, urban zones and industrial parks.
