Vietnam has chosen July 30 as the National Day for Anti- Trafficking in Persons, according to a decision promulgated by the Prime Minister on May 10, 2016.

A press conference on the launch of the day was held in Hanoi on July 14 by the Ministry of Information and Communications, Ministry of Public Security (MPS) and the United Nations in Vietnam.

Speaking at the conference, Major General Nguyen Phong Hoa, Deputy General Director of the General Police Department under the MPS said that the launch of the day aimed to mobilise the power and resources of both the Government and the people to prevent and combat trafficking in persons at the national scale.

The Party, the National Assembly and the Government of Vietnam have invested great attention and provided implementation guidance, whilst government agencies at all levels have been diligent in combating human-trafficking, he stressed.

According to a representative of the United Nations in Vietnam, human trafficking is a serious crime against humanity and a grave violation of human rights, which is increasing in both number of cases and complexity.

The United Nations is committed to supporting the Government of Vietnam in combating trafficking in persons as well as in fulfilling its commitments to the international community, and in promoting co-operation between governments.

Recent data collected by the MPS has shown that in the period from 2011 to 2015, government authorities have detected and investigated more than 2,200 cases of human trafficking, arrested 3,300 offenders, and rescued and received approximately 5,500 returned victims of trafficking.

However, the situation of human trafficking remains both complicated and challenging and the number of occurrences continues to rise, as shows with an increase of 11.6% for the 2011 – 2015 period, as compared to the previous period.
