Doctors from the provincial General Hospital said that most of the fatalities were due to the failure of parents in taking their children to the hospital promptly, even after they had prolonged high fever for unknown reasons.
Another reason for the deaths was that the children were not vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis, the doctors said.
They added that Japanese encephalitis patients often show initial symptoms of high fever, headache, vomiting, and light or deep coma.
Japanese encephalitis is considered to be a dangerous disease as it has a high mortality rate, the doctors said.
Head of the health department Lau Say Chu said that the province recorded 84 cases of children suffering from Japanese encephalitis during this time.
