Indonesia to release Vietnamese boats, fishermen

The Vietnamese embassy in Indonesia and Indonesian agencies are finalising repatriation procedures for 690 Vietnamese fishermen captured for illegally fishing in Indonesian waters.

The Vietnamese embassy in Indonesia and Indonesian agencies are finalising repatriation procedures for 690 Vietnamese fishermen captured for illegally fishing in Indonesian waters.

It is expected that three Vietnamese coast guard ships will arrive at Batam Port on Friday morning to pick up the fishermen.

According to Hoàng Anh Tuấn, Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia, the return of fishermen on boat is the safest and most effective way of transporting such a large number of fishermen to Vietnam.

If they were transported by airlines, the fishermen wouldn’t be back to the country until the end of this year.

The number of Vietnamese fishermen brought home since the beginning of this year would be 1,030 people, including 690 fishermen returning this turn, equal to the number of those handed over in 2016.
