According to the police report, they checked passenger buses on the Thang Long Avenue from 5 pm to 8 pm on April 27 and found many were overloaded.

"At 7.35 pm, a 40-seat bus was found transporting 59 passengers," the report said. "This sleeper bus allowed many passengers to sit along the bed rows. The driver was fined VND8.50 million and had his driving licence suspended for two months. The bus company was also fined VND17 million."

Some minutes later, another bus was found transporting eight passengers more than its capacity. The driver was given a fine of VND4 million and had his driving licence withdrawn for two months. The bus company was also fined VND8 million.

Another bus which operates on the Dien Bien Province-Quang Ninh Province route was carrying 16 more passengers than capacity. The route was over 300 kilometres and so the driver was given a heavy fine of VND16 million and had his driving licence withdrawn for two months. The bus company was also fined VND32 million.

The drivers explained that as demand for the Reunification Day Holiday is rising, they tried to take more passengers to save on fuel costs.

Major Pham Van Chien from Hanoi Traffic Police said that they were mobilising more staff to deal with possible rising traffic violations, especially during National Reunification Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1).
