Three Chinese nationals are given jail sentences for murder and robbery.

At the trial on September 8, the Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Court handed Huang Jie Cheng, 19, a 19-year sentence, Luo Shen Jun, 17, 13 years, and Gan Ying, 18, 11 years. They were convicted of murder and robbery.

According to the indictment, the trio illegally entered Quang Ninh Province on July 26, 2024, seeking jobs through an unidentified online contact. Around 3 am the next day, they took a taxi driven by a 48-year-old man from Ha Long City, heading south.

During the journey, Luo noticed the taxi’s navigation indicated Cambodia as the destination. Believing they had been deceived and would be trafficked, the group conspired to kill the driver, seize the vehicle, and return to China.

By 6 pm that day in Quang Ngai, the three assigned roles to each other. An hour later, they strangled the driver with a shirt as planned, dumped his body on a deserted road, and Huang took the wheel.

They then drove north, discarding the victim’s two mobile phones to avoid tracking and stealing VND 3.5 million (approximately USD 140) and 100 yuan.

The three were intercepted in Quang Binh Province after attempting to evade a traffic police checkpoint, where they were overpowered and arrested.
