
At 7 am on October 30, water levels on the Thu Bon River reached 3.32m, surpassing the historic flood peak recorded in 1964, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

By the morning of October 30, Hoi An’s old quarter was almost entirely underwater, with areas around Chua Cau or the Japanese Covered Bridge submerged up to an estimated 2m.

The Hoai River overflowed, surrounding the old town with muddy floodwater.

Road traffic has been paralysed, leaving boats as the only means of transport.


Local resident Bui Thanh Son said his home was flooded by about 1.7m.

Authorities have been delivering essential food supplies to households still stranded in deeply flooded neighbourhoods.

Water levels on the upper and middle sections of the Vu Gia-Thu Bon River system are receding slowly.
