More North-South trains cancelled due to severe floods

Severe flooding has disrupted the North-South railway through Hue and Quang Tri, forcing Vietnam Railways to cancel more services.

The state-owned operator said floodwaters continued to submerge parts of the line between Hue and Quang Tri, prompting the suspension of trains SE1, SE19 and SE20. Other services, including SE2, SE3/4, SE5/6 and SE7/9, were delayed for hours, with passengers shuttled between Huong Thuy and Dong Ha stations.

Many areas in the central region of Vietnam severely flooded

Between October 28 and 10 am on October 29, more than 4,500 passengers were safely transferred across flooded areas. Free meals and water were provided while trains awaited clearance to resume their journeys. Vietnam Railways also offered full refunds or ticket exchanges within 30 days for affected travellers.

According to the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam, heavy rain from October 26-29 caused widespread flooding and landslides across major highways, particularly along the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road.

By the morning of October 29, most low-lying routes in Hue and Quang Tri had reopened, though dozens of major landslides remained. Hue recorded 49 landslide points, with 25 still blocked.

Further south, fresh landslides along the Ho Chi Minh Road in Quang Ngai and Danang caused complete traffic closures at several locations.

While rain has eased over southern Quang Tri and Hue, road and rail maintenance crews remain on alert as further heavy downpours are forecast in the coming days.
