Heavy rain persists across south-central Vietnam

Heavy rain continues to hit central and south-central Vietnam, with some areas receiving more than 100 mm and facing severe flooding.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, a cold spell on the afternoon of December 4 affected the northeast, north-central region and parts of the northwest and central areas.

Light rain was reported across the northeast and north-central provinces before easing to isolated showers, while temperatures dropped by 1-3 degrees Celsius. Northeasterly winds at Bach Long Vi Island strengthened to level 6.

The cold spell is expected to intensify slightly on December 5, extending its impact to more areas in the northwest and central regions. The north will see occasional light rain and colder conditions, with some high-altitude locations experiencing severe cold.

Minimum temperatures will range between 15-18 degrees Celsius in the northern and north-central regions, 13-15 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas and below 12 degrees Celsius in higher elevations.

On December 4, Danang and eastern districts from Quang Ngai to Gia Lai recorded moderate to torrential rain, with some areas seeing intense downpours and thunderstorms. From 7 am to 8 pm, rainfall exceeded 90 mm in several locations, including Long Mon in Quang Ngai (117 mm) and Que Luu in Danang (99 mm).

Areas from southern Quang Tri to Danang and eastern Quang Ngai on December 5 are forecast to see moderate to heavy rain, with 30-60 mm expected and local totals above 100 mm.

Eastern districts of Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with 10-30 mm of rain and isolated amounts above 60 mm.

Some areas in Lam Dong Province, including Ham Thang Ward and Tan Lap Commune, have been heavily inundated. Local authorities have deployed rescue teams to move residents to safety.
