The number of children infected with hand, foot and mouth disease in HCM City has been on the rise.
According to Doctor Truong Huu Khanh from the HCM City Children's Hospital 1, the hospital receives around 20-30 hand, foot and mouth disease cases per day. Most of them are aged between 1 and 2.
Although only a very small rate of the patients are in serious conditions, this would be a warning sign of a new outbreak of the disease that could last until the end of June, Khanh added.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reported that over the past week, the city’s number of foot, hand and mouth disease cases had increased nearly four-fold compared to four weeks previously.
In the first four months of this year, the city recorded 936 hand, foot and mouth disease patients, with children under five accounting for 95 percent of the total.
Hand, foot and mouth disease often breaks out in Vietnam between April and June and September and November every year. If not timely treated, children can face severe complications such as meningitis and heart problems which can lead to risk of death.
