The city today, October 11, held a meeting to review results of the population and housing census this year.

HCM City's population has reached 8.99 million people


According to the municipal Department of Statistics, the southern hub’s current population is 8.99 million, up 1.8 million people against 2009, including 4.4 million men. Up to 99% of people aged from 15 are literate, up 4.7% against 20 years ago.

Vo Thanh Sang, deputy head of the city’s Department of Statistics, HCM City accounts for up to 50.44% of the Southeast region and 9.5% of the country’s population.

HCM City also has the highest population density in Vietnam with 4,292 people per square metre, up 874 compared to 2009.

Binh Tan District tops the population number with 784,173 people, followed by  Binh Chanh with 705,508 and Go Vap with 676,899. Can Tho ranks lowest with 71,526 people.

There are roughly 2.5 million households in HCM City, up 743,000 against 10 years ago, making up one sixth of the country.
