More than 1,000 local and international delegates attended a meeting in Hanoi on July 7 to mark the 18th anniversary of the International Year of Cooperatives and the 90th anniversary of International Cooperative Day.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung emphasized that, with great efforts and determination from the Party and the people, Vietnam will overcome its difficulties and fulfill its targets to develop into a modern industrialized country by 2020, and the cooperative sector, including the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance (VCA), will play an important role.
He added that he hopes the VCA will continue making contributions to the nation's development.
The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) is one of the largest international organizations, representing 750,000 cooperatives from 100 member countries with nearly a billion members. The cooperative sector has contributed directly to improving living conditions for half the world's population, especially in terms of sustainable development, poverty reduction and implementing the millennium development goals.
Through this year’s theme of “Cooperative Enterprises Building a Better World”, the IAC hopes to introduce a typical cooperative model to the public.
There are 19,500 cooperatives in Vietnam with more than 13 million members and workers. Agriculture, rural development and low income earners are the main beneficiaries of the sector.
