Hanoi considers second airport to ease pressure on Noi Bai

Hanoi is studying plans for a second airport about 40km south of the city centre to relieve congestion at Noi Bai International Airport and support long-term aviation growth.

Authorities in Hanoi are considering building a second airport around 40 kilometres south of the city centre to reduce congestion at Noi Bai International Airport.

The proposal appears in a draft report for the capital’s master plan with a 100-year vision, which the Hanoi People’s Committee is currently seeking public feedback on.

Under the plan, the new airport would be located in the area of Tram Long, Dong Tan, Minh Duc and Kim Duong communes in the former Ung Hoa District, covering about 1,300-1,500 hectares.

The airport is intended to support Noi Bai and handle both domestic and international passenger traffic while strengthening Hanoi’s connectivity with other regions and countries.

Planning documents estimate the facility could handle 30-50 million passengers annually and around 1 million tonnes of cargo.

The airport is expected to include a 3,600-metre runway, a 3,000-metre parallel taxiway, an air traffic control tower and supporting infrastructure.

Authorities also plan to reserve land in the southern area for the airport’s long-term development, with construction timing to depend on future demand.

The master plan envisions linking the airport with Phu Xuyen Urban Area through an airport city model, creating a major multimodal transport hub integrating aviation, railways, waterways and roads.

The southern airport area is expected to become a key transport gateway for northern Vietnam and a southern gateway urban zone for the capital.

Planned transport links include the Phap Van-Cau Gie Expressway and Cho Ben-Yen My Expressway, along with two major urban corridors, Ngoc Hoi-Phu Xuyen and the southern economic axis.

Meanwhile, urban railway line 9 is proposed to connect Ngoc Hoi, Thuong Tin, the new airport and Phu Xuyen, while a high-speed rail station is expected to be located near the airport site.

Until construction begins, the designated airport area will be managed to preserve land for the project, while residents may continue using it temporarily.
