Hanoi bus passenger numbers surge

Hanoi’s state-run bus operator carried more than 240 million passengers in 2025, a year-on-year rise of 2.5 per cent, as services expanded and electrification gathered pace.

Hanoi Transport Corporation, known as Transerco, reported the figures at its year-end review. Chief executive Nguyen Thanh Nam said operations remained stable, jobs were safeguarded, workers’ incomes rose and service quality was maintained alongside a shift to greener vehicles.

During 2025, Transerco stabilised operations on 44 re-tendered routes, adjusted fleet sizes on 17 routes and optimised timetables on 37 routes. It also added a branch of Route 20A to extend services to Minh Chau, Hanoi’s only island commune.

Two commercial routes serving Noi Bai International Airport carried 364,005 passengers, while the City Tour route transported more than 196,700 passengers, exceeding its target by over 14.3 per cent.

As part of its digital and green transition, Transerco put 63 electric buses into service on four routes and installed nearly 300 charging points to support fleet electrification.

Interprovincial transport also improved, with nearly 748,000 vehicle trips recorded, equivalent to 101.5 per cent of the annual plan.

This year, the operator plans to enhance service quality, upgrade passenger features on its apps, expand data-driven risk management, roll out e-ticketing across all routes and convert 175 diesel buses to electric under the city’s roadmap.
