The grave-visiting festival, which is widely celebrated by Vietnamese people nationwide, starts on the 15th day of the second lunar month and lasts for 15-16 days. However, people can celebrate the festival from the beginning of the month.

In the southern province of Bac Lieu, thousands of people gathered at a large cemetery during the last weekend to visit their ancestral graves.

During the festival, people will come to tidy up and renovate the graves of their ancestors. They also prepare some offerings including flowers, fruits, cakes, rice and meat, for the deceased.

A local man, Nguyen Van Hung, said that he was working in Can Tho Province but returned home to celebrate the grave-visiting festival with his family.

"This is a very meaningful festival which reminds us of our ancestors," Hung said. "It also helps teach our children to remember and respect our ancestors. So I've never missed this festival with my family."

Despite the hot weather, many families gathered and had lunch beside their family graves.
