Deputy PM Le Van Thanh signed a decision to go ahead with a VND 7 trillion (USD305 million) investment in Sapa Airport based on a Public-private partnership (PPP) funding model.

Sapa Airport will be built on a 371-hectare land plot in Cam Con Commune, Bao Yen District, Lao Cai Province.

Construction will take four years and be divided into two phases.
In the first phase which will start from 2021, Sapa Airport will be developed as a 4C and a military airport with a capacity of serving 1.5 million passengers a year.
The second phase will begin in 2029 when the airport will continue to be completed to serve three million passengers a year.
The project is aimed at meeting the rising air travel demand and would boost social-economic development in the area. The airport would also help support rescue work in the northwestern region.
