The incident occurred on June 7 near Terminal 2 of Noi Bai International Airport. A man posing as a ride-hailing driver approached him and offered him a trip to central Hanoi.

He initially expected to pay around VND 400,000 for the ride. However, upon arriving at their hotel on Hang Bong Street, the driver showed them a fake ride-hailing app displaying a manipulated fare.

The driver claimed the total fare was VND 900,000, including VND700,000 for the ride and an additional VND 200,000 as an airport parking fee.

"I felt cheated," the tourist wrote in the email, noting that the driver rejected attempts to negotiate. "I didn't want money to overshadow my trip," he added. Ultimately, the tourist paid the fare but snapped a photo of the car's licence plate to report the incident to authorities.

On June 22, Noi Bai International Airport police concluded their investigation, identifying the offenders as a married couple from Soc Son District, Hanoi. They were found guilty of illegally soliciting passengers and overcharging the tourist.

The couple has been dealt with legally, and police are trying to contact the tourist to arrange a refund.

A typical fare from Noi Bai International Airport to Hanoi's Old Quarter is only about VND 350,000, plus a VND 17,000 toll fee, totalling VND 367,000.
