An elderly man in Hanoi is calling for financial support to help cover medical treatment for his son who is in critical condition after a workplace accident.

77-year-old Nguyen Phi Bon has three sons and one daughter. He worked as a mechanic in Hanoi and retired in 1992. His monthly pension is only VND1m (USD43) so he did odd jobs at the local confectionery and engineering factories.

Bon's wife died in 2016 because of cancer and his daughter is mentally stunted. She is a single mother and her son is also mentally stunted. Bon's youngest son left two years ago and hasn't contacted the family. His oldest son, Nguyen Phi Thuy, is also poor. His third son, Nguyen Phi Son, is already separated from his wife. He and his two sons live with Bon afterwards.

Unfortunately, Son fell off a scaffold at work. He suffered from multiple injuries and was admitted to the August 19th Hospital. He has brain contusion, a fractured shoulder blade and lung injury. Bon said they already sold the house when his sons' businesses suffered losses and owed the bank a billion VND.

"I don't know where to get the money now," he said.

The family borrowed everyone they could VND109m (USD4,739) for hospital treatment and over VND70m on medicines.

Nguyen Van Thuan, head of Hop Nhat Village, said they were considering listing Bon's family as a near-poor household for more benefits. They hope Bon and his family will get help from the community.
