An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale has happened in the central province of Quang Nam’s Bac Tra My District, affecting dozens of local houses.

Several houses have been abandoned in Tra Doc Commune after being damaged by recent earthquakes

According to the Institute of Geophysics’s Vietnam Earthquake information and Tsunami Warning Centre, the incident occurred at around 9:18 am on March 7.

Ho Van Loi, chairman of Tra Doc Commune People’s Committee, said that the earthquake damaged up to 30 houses in villages 3A and 3B in the commune. “We will make a report on the damage to submit it to the district,” he noted.

Ho Van Lieu, head of Village 3A, said that many local residents could feel the shake clearly and quickly left their house.

Bac Tra My District has experienced several earthquakes, including the largest recorded so far in the area that measured 4.7 on the Richter scale in 2012.

Experts concluded in 2012 that the series of tremors occurring in the area were due to seismic activities caused by water stored in the Bac Tra My hydropower plant reservoir and that their magnitude was not greater than the reservoir's capacity to withstand quakes of up to 5.5 magnitude.
