Traffic police said that by December 15, the third day since the system became operational, compliance with road safety rules had improved at major intersections, including Nguyen Xien-Khuat Duy Tien, one of the capitals busiest junctions.

Despite heavy traffic during the morning rush hour, motorists were seen stopping behind lane markings, with fewer cases of jostling or encroachment than in previous days.

Police said the AI camera system automatically records violations and flags offences such as oversized loads and obscured licence plates, with images transmitted in real time to on duty officers for enforcement.

On Monday morning, police fined a female motorcyclist VND 900,000 (USD 37) for using a mobile phone while riding.

In a separate case, a ride hailing motorbike driver was fined VND 5 million and had six licence points deducted for concealing his licence plate with a face mask.

Several drivers initially claimed the violations were accidental but later admitted they had deliberately covered their plates out of concern over automated fines, police said.

According to traffic officers, the AI system has helped ease congestion and improve road safety awareness, although some motorists are still attempting to evade enforcement.

Under Vietnams Decree 168 2024, covering, altering or obscuring licence plates carries fines of VND 4-6 million for motorbikes and VND 20-26 million for cars, along with licence point deductions.
