The patient, a 33-year-old man from Hamlet 2 in Trang Bom Commune, works as a street vendor. He developed symptoms on November 24, including two days of persistent fever followed by ulcers on his neck, buttocks and abdomen.
Four days after symptom onset, he sought treatment at HCM City Dermatology Hospital, which sent samples to the Pasteur Institute in HCM City. Test results confirmed he was positive for monkeypox. He has since responded well to treatment, with lesions healing and his condition stabilising.

Skin lesions are among the symptoms of monkeypox
The patient said he had not left his locality, had no contact with foreigners between November 3 and 24 and reported no sexual partners or same-sex relations before falling ill. The source of infection therefore remains unknown. He lives with his sister’s family, and three close contacts have been identified; none have shown symptoms.
Following confirmation of the case, the Trang Bom Medical Centre tightened control measures, launched contact tracing and established containment zones to prevent further transmission.
Local health agencies are also intensifying public communication on the outbreak and issuing prevention guidelines to raise awareness.
