Dung Quat diesel spill pollutes rivers and farmland

A diesel spill from a storage facility in the Dung Quat Economic Zone in the central province of Quang Ngai has polluted farmland and rivers.

According to the People’s Committee of Van Tuong Commune, diesel leaked from Sub-Depot 85 of Depot 182 during a fuel intake operation on December 24, when the operator was working with inspectors to check flow meters receiving fuel from the Dung Quat Refinery.

The spill flowed into drainage channels before spreading to Dam River, Bau Ca Cai River and surrounding rice fields.

Local authorities have recorded damage to about 15 hectares of rice fields and 3 hectares of aquaculture ponds affected by the diesel contamination.

The operator of Sub-Depot 85 is deploying floating booms and absorbent materials to contain and recover the spilled fuel.

Authorities have ordered the facility’s operator to take urgent measures to prevent further spread of pollution and minimise environmental damage.
