The 120.2 km railway will run through Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Haiphong and Quang Ninh. It is designed as a fully electrified double track line with a standard gauge of 1,435 mm.

Trains will operate at a maximum speed of 350 km per hour, though sections within Hanoi will be limited to 120 km per hour due to urban conditions. Once operational, the line is expected to reduce travel time between the two destinations from more than two hours to approximately 23 minutes.

The route will start at Co Loa Station in Dong Anh Commune, within the Vietnam Exposition Centre, and end at Ha Long Station in Tuan Chau Ward. Three intermediate stations will be located in Gia Binh, Ninh Xa and Yen Tu, while a depot will be built at the Ha Long terminus for maintenance and operations.

The project will use a new generation of high speed trains and advanced signalling systems supplied by Siemens Mobility, with technology transfer planned during implementation.

Officials described the railway as a major infrastructure initiative that will boost regional connectivity, support economic growth and enhance travel convenience between northern Vietnam’s key economic centres.

The line is expected to enter commercial operation in 2028.
