Electric workers have detected detected the damaged cable section in Co To Island but it would take at least eight days to fix it as it located deep in the sea.

Chairman of Co To Island District People's Committee, Tran Nhu Long called on tourists not to come to Co To Island at this time to reduce pressure on the power and water supplies in the area.

The popular island has experienced power cuts since June 18 when the local power system was struck by lightning.

Director of Quang Ninh Provincial Department of Electricity, Nguyen Thanh Tinh, told the Lao Dong Newspaper on June 21 that they had detected the damaged cable section but it would take at least eight days to fix it as it located deep in the sea.

"The repair will take time due to difficult terrain," Tinh said. "There have been strong winds and high waves over the past couple of days, and if this weather lasts long, I'm afraid it may take a month to fix the problem."

It is the peak summer holiday season and Co To Island is a popular destination in the north, which its authorities reported receiving between 7,000 - 10,000 visitors a day.

Meanwhile, Long said that the island should only receive some 5,000 visitors a day to ensure good services.

Following the power outages on the island, Long advised tourists to visit other neighbouring islands in Quang Ninh including Quan Lan, Minh Chau, Ngoc Vung and Ban Sen instead.

"We'll make an announcement when electricity is restored," he said.
