Chess GM Liem wins again at Asian Champs

Top Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem won two successive matches at the Asian Chess Championships after his unexpected first round loss against China's Xiu Deshun.

Liem, top seed and strong contender for the first place at the tournament, being beat his elder brother Le Quang Long and China's Ma Qun in the second and third round.

Meanwhile, his teammate and fourth seed Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, had only 1.5 points after three draws.


In the fourth round Liem will face Nguyen Van Huy while Son will play Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy.


Chinese players Yu Yangyi and Liu Qingnan are leading the open standard chess tournament with three points each.


In the women's division, Nguyen Thi Thanh An and Hoang Thi Bao Tram both scored two wins and a draw to earn 2.5 points. Pham Le Thao Nguyen has two points.


An’s opponent in the fourth round will be Munguntuul Batkhuyag from Mongolia, while Tram will meet Tan Zhongyi from China.


Mongolian Batchimeg Tuvshintugs and Indonesian Sukandar Irine Kharisma share first places in the women's division with three points each.


The tournament, which attracted about 120 players from 15 countries, will conclude on May 14.
