The Central Highlands province of Kon Tum witnessed an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter Scale this afternoon, April 18, according to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre.

The earthquake is recorded in Kon Plong District on April 18


The earthquake, which occurred at around 1 pm in Kon Plong District, had a depth of 8.1 kilometres. This was the strongest among hundreds of earthquakes recorded in the district since April 2021.

Over the past one year, Kon Plong has recorded hundreds of earthquakes with the majority all being weak and moderate and causing no danger. The locality even recorded 6-7 tremors with in a day.

Earlier, Associate Prof. Dr Cao Dinh Trieu, former deputy head of the Institute of Geophysics, said the areas where the earthquakes happened in Kon Tum are located on the fault system of Rao Quan-A Luoi. The system starts in Laos and stretches until the southern central province of Binh Dinh’s Quy Nhon City.
