Vietnam celebrates Vesak from May 28

A parade of 1,000 monks and children was held in Hue City. Hue is considered a cradle of Buddhism in Vietnam so so it attracts hundreds of people on major events.

Thousands of people already gathered in Hoi An on May 28 to celebrate the festival.

Nguyen Thi Lan, a tourist from Danang said, "My family goes to Hoi An for Vesak Festival every year to pray for health and peace. I also love hearing the stories and teachings."

The monks at Bo De Pagoda in Hanoi released 17,000 fish, including carp to mark the festival. The event has been held by Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and the Directorate of Fisheries every year.

"Releasing rare and endangered species will also help those species survive and spread. Releasing animals on the Vesak is supposed to raise public awareness about the issue," said Nguyen Quang Hung, deputy head of the Directorate of Fisheries.

Monk Thich Dam Lan, head of Bo De Pagoda, said both the residents and local authorities supported the event.
