A few years ago, Het borrowed money to invest in a shrimp farm to escape poverty. Unfortunately, he suffered huge losses and fell deeper into poverty. Their house has deteriorated and can not protect them from the rain.
Het was diagnosed with tongue cancer three years ago. Doctors said he was too malnourished for an operation so Thuy kept borrowing money to treat her husband. The food and medicine have cost them nearly VND150m (USD6,500).
"He said he wanted to die so he wouldn't be a burden to us," Thuy said. "We have to borrow money to pay VND2m of monthly interest of other debts. We can't borrow anywhere else. Our children may have to drop out of school."

Dang Van Hue, chairman of the Red Cross Organisation in Dinh Trung Commune, confirmed Thuy's family's situation and hoped that they will get help.
