Deputy director of the provincial Department of Police Colonel Nguyen Van Han reported that on September 7, a car had been intercepted in Bac Lieu City transporting 49 bags of goods which contained up to 497 pieces of ivory, equal to nearly 1.5 tonnes.

At the time, the car contained three people, driver Nguyen Thanh Long and two others, including one border guard from Bac Lieu Province, Han added. He, however, did not disclose any further information.
At the police station, the arrested said that the elephant tusks were from Africa and had been transported to Bac Lieu by sea. After that, the ivory will be divided into smaller bags for sale.
