Australia will support Vietnam’s national vaccine rollout by providing 1.5 million AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2021.
According to the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, these doses will complement Australia’s existing $40 million package to help Vietnam with its COVID-19 vaccine rollout.
So far, Vietnam has received more than 2.4 million doses through the COVAX scheme, with more to follow.
According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country hopes to secure a total of 150 million doses of vaccines for 70% of the population. As of now, Vietnam has signed commitments and contracts for 105 million doses. 38.9 million doses will come from COVAX Facility, 30 million doses of Astra Zeneca, 31 million doses of Pfizer and five million doses of Moderna Vaccine. Vietnam is negotiating for 40 million doses of Sputnik-V from Russia and 15 million doses of Covaxin from India.
As of July 12, over eight million doses had arrived in Vietnam. Via COVAX Facility, over one million doses of Pfizer will be transferred to Vietnam from July to September. COVAX Facility also shows support to transfer mRNA technology to Vietnam. Experts will be sent to Vietnam to help Vietnam become one of the vaccine manufacturers in the region.
