Arrests made in gold-smuggling case

4 people involved in smuggling 92 kilos of unaccounted for gold were arrested, according to Colonel Nguyen Chi Phi, Director of Tien Giang Police.

So far, 4 people involved in smuggling 92 kilos of unaccounted for gold were arrested, according to Colonel Nguyen Chi Phi, Director of Tien Giang Police.

They are driver Tran Phi Toan, Le Van Son born in 1959 living at Tan Chau, An Giang; Nguyen Van Loi born in 1979 living at Cho Moi, An Giang and Hong Duc Sanh born in 1950 living at Chau Phu, An Giang.

In the evening of February 4, police in Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province stopped a suspicious vehicle and discovered about 92 kilograms of gold. The driver could not produce any legitimate documents to prove the origin of the gold. The car was taken to the police station for further investigation.

All persons arrested have confessed that they were hired by two people living in An Giang to carry the gold from An Giang to Ho Chi Minh City. Exactly who the hirers are and where they are from has yet to be revealed.

Authorities believe the case is more than the simple transporting of gold and will continue investigating.
