Eight people are either dead or missing after a fire burnt down a factory in Hanoi's Nam Tu Liem District on April 12.

The fire broke out at around 2.15 am at Alleyway 1, Dai Linh, Trung Van Ward. The fire caused severe damaged to four factories and the residential area. Firefighters were quickly dispatched but couldn't access the site as the factory is located deep within the alleyway and there were many flammable materials around.

Phung Manh Dung, chairman of Trung Van Ward, said, "The fire broke out at a plastics factory. They make rubbish bins for an environmental company. We are trying to lower the heat to go inside and search for the victims."

300 firefighters and police were sent to the scene. Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung also arrived at the scene to watch the emergency services at work. Around 1,000-square-metres were burnt down. The police have found six bodies after the fire and two people are still missing.

The fire was completely extinguished four hours later. Most of the victims were workers and stayed near the factory of Environment Company 79.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
