64 killed in Tet road accidents

A total of 109 road traffic accidents happened during January 27-29 across Vietnam, leaving 64 dead and 112 injured, according to National Traffic Safety Committee.

The three-day period covered the transition from the old to new lunar new year.

 

Nguyen Trong Thai, committee deputy office manager, said the number of deaths was the same, but injuries had increased by 14.2%.

On Sunday alone, 42 road accidents occurred, leaving 25 dead and 36 others injured.

On these three days, traffic police recorded 5,079 traffic violations, and issued total fines of VND1.87 billion (, seizing 1,546 motorbikes.

Thai also added that, on this occasion, the committee had received complaints about over-crowded coaches and over-charging by coach operators.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health reported that hospitals nationwide received 2,203 cases for medical check-up due to fights, including 14 deaths, while nearly 1,000 were admitted for treatment, higher than last Tet.
