A total of 268 traffic accidents occurred across Vietnam during the five-day holiday marking Reunification Day (30 April) and May Day, leaving 128 people dead and 203 injured, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
Of the reported cases, 265 incidents took place on roads, causing 126 fatalities and 200 injuries. One railway accident left one dead and three injured, while two waterway accidents resulted in one fatality. Compared to the same five-day holiday period in 2024, the number of accidents decreased by 79, deaths fell by 10, and the number of injuries dropped by 82.
One of the most serious accidents occurred at midday on April 30, when a container truck collided with a motorbike on National Highway 51, heading from Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau, killing two people at the scene.
Throughout the holiday, nationwide traffic police increased patrols and enforcement to ensure road safety. Over 41,700 traffic violations were recorded, resulting in fines totalling more than VND118 billion (approx. USD4.6 million). Authorities temporarily impounded 221 cars and 11,300 motorbikes, and revoked 1,313 driving licences.
Among the violations, more than 9,100 cases involved drunk driving, 11,360 related to speeding, 256 involved overloaded vehicles, and 35 individuals tested positive for drugs.
According to a representative of the National Traffic Safety Committee, stricter enforcement of alcohol limits and speed regulations contributed to better traffic control this year. Transport operators also added more vehicles across road, rail, and air services, helping to meet the travel demands of the public.
Nevertheless, heavy congestion was still reported on the first and last days of the holiday, particularly at gateways, ring roads, and expressways leading in and out of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, due to the surge in traffic volume.
