As many as 12 houses and a large area of garden fell into the river in a serious landslide that occurred in the southern province of Vinh Long on the evening of December 5.

Head of Vinh Long Province’s Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention - Search and Rescue, Luu Nhuan, announced on Tuesday morning that the landslide occurred on the afternoon and evening of December 5 in Hoa Ninh Commune, Long Ho District.

‘The landslide spread some 500 metres long and pulled 12 riverside houses into the river as of 8 pm on Monday’, the official reported. ‘About 100,000 square metres of fruit garden had also been washed away. We had to evacuate 24 households in the area during the night’.

It is estimated that the landslide caused a loss of VND 7 billion.

One local resident, Nguyen Ha, said that cracks started appearing at his house at 4pm on December 5 and then it gradually fell into the river by the late afternoon.

‘My fruit garden also slid into the river during the night’, Ha said.

Local authorities have sent a rescue team to the area to investigate the case and ensure safety for local residents.
