11 rescued as cargo ship sinks off Ha Tinh

Eleven crew members have been rescued after the Cong Thanh 7 cargo vessel sank about 9 nautical miles off Vung Ang Port in Ha Tinh Province on Sunday.

According to Ha Tinh Port Authority, all 11 crew members aboard the Cong Thanh 7 were found and safely rescued by search and rescue teams by midday on May 26.

Nguyen Duc Tung, Director of the Ha Tinh Maritime Administration, confirmed that the rescue operation was successful. 

The Cong Thanh 7 was transporting 4,900 tonnes of coal from Quang Ninh to Quang Binh when it suffered an engine failure and encountered rough seas near Vung Ang Port. The vessel sank at around 8.40 pm on May 25. Crew members sent out a distress signal and jumped into the sea before the ship went down.

Local authorities, together with nearby fishing boats, launched a rescue operation upon receiving the distress call. The first crew member was found drifting at sea and brought ashore by a fisherman at 5.45 am on May 26.

By noon, the Ha Tinh Port Authority reported that all 11 crew members had been rescued and were being taken to Vung Ang Port in Ky Anh Town for medical care.
