According to the authorities in Quynh Luu District, the ship, which was called Song Que, was controlled by captain Nguyen Van Tri, 32, and was on its way to go fishing.
Other ships said they received SOS signals from Song Que at around midnight and tried to rescue them immediately. However, they were unable to save anyone because the ship sank too fast.
An estimated six missing fishermen were from An Hoa Commune and the rest were from the communes of Quynh Nghia, Quynh Hung and Nghia Dan.
According to the uncle of captain Tri, they were out at the sea for just two days before the accident. Tri's family decided to borrow over VND1.8 billion to build the ship only two months ago and this was the ship's second trip.
On November 29, Le Van Cuong, Chairman of Quynh Luu District People's Committee, said the border guards are still searching for missing people.
Other fishing crew from ships nearby said they only saw debris on the water. None of the missing people have been found.
