The largest freshwater reservoir in the Mekong Delta region is scheduled to be put into operation next year.

The largest freshwater reservoir in the Mekong Delta region is scheduled to be put into operation next year.

The Lac Dia freshwater reservoir has a capacity of 2.3 million cubic metres, covers an area of 57 hectares, and reaches a depth of 3.5 metres. Located in Ba Tri District, Ben Tre Province, the USD14.28-million project began in June last year. As of now, approximately 82 percent of the work has been completed.

Once put into use in the first half of 2025, the reservoir is expected to help ensure the water supply for nearly 60,000 households in Ba Tri during the annual dry season.

Ben Tre Province invested in the project.

Lac Dia freshwater reservoir is around seven kilometres from Kenh Lap, the largest in the Mekong Delta region, with a capacity of 800,000 cubic metres. However, Kenh Lap failed to provide sufficient water for residents to cope with the drought and salinity crisis in 2020, so Ben Tre authorities decided to build the Lac Dia freshwater reservoir.

Amid severe climate change, Ben Tre has been among the localities hardest hit by drought and salinity since 2016.
