4.6 tonnes of counterfeit turmeric powder seized in Phu Tho

Police in Phu Tho Province have seized more than 4.6 tonnes of counterfeit turmeric powder and thousands of kilogrammes of raw materials from a facility accused of producing fake food products.

The seizure followed an investigation into a production site operated by Dang Thi Nga, 55, in Vinh Phu Commune. Nga has been charged with producing and trading counterfeit food and food additives.

Authorities said the counterfeit product was made by mixing cassava starch and corn flour with food colouring to resemble turmeric powder. It was sold to distributors for VND 14,000-19,000 (USD 0.53-0.72) per kilogramme before reaching consumers.

Laboratory tests found the seized products contained no curcuminoids, the compounds responsible for turmeric's characteristic properties, police said.

Authorities warned that consumers could unknowingly purchase products that did not provide the advertised benefits and could pose potential health risks.

Police advised consumers to buy products with clear labelling and traceable origins, and to avoid unusually cheap products or those heavily promoted on social media.
