Khanh Hoa seeks to reduce vehicle fires on expressways

Khanh Hoa Province is stepping up measures to reduce vehicle fires on expressways after six incidents in the first half of 2026 caused nearly VND 2 billion (USD 76,000) in damage.

The provincial police held a meeting on Tuesday with traffic police, transport authorities and expressway operators to review recent incidents and improve emergency response.

The province recorded 13 vehicle fires in the first six months of the year, causing an estimated VND 9.18 billion in property damage. Six of those fires occurred on expressways, resulting in losses of about VND 1.95 billion.

Firefighters have worked with relevant agencies to extinguish fires, investigate their causes and restore traffic after incidents, police said.

Authorities said emergency response on expressways remained challenging because of the long distance between interchanges and incident sites, limited access to water for firefighting and heavy traffic.

Police called for additional service areas with firefighting water supplies, expanded camera surveillance to detect overheating vehicles and the deployment of small rapid-response firefighting motorcycles along expressways.
