Hanoi speeds up drainage projects to curb urban flooding

Hanoi has accelerated drainage and flood-control projects, saying newly completed works improved water runoff during early-season downpours as the city seeks to reduce chronic urban flooding.

Hanoi authorities said a series of drainage, pumping station and retention pond projects had been completed or entered operation ahead of the 2026 rainy season, helping improve drainage capacity in several flood-prone areas.

The city said the projects reduced waterlogging and shortened drainage times during heavy rains on July 9 and July 10, although localized flooding was still reported on several roads.

Vice Chairman Truong Viet Dung said the projects were improving drainage capacity and supporting Hanoi's long-term flood control plan.

Several projects, including upgrades to the Kim Nguu Canal, Thuy Phuong Canal and a number of retention ponds, have been completed or are nearing completion, while others are scheduled to finish in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Rapid urbanisation and the expansion of built-up areas, coupled with more intense rainfall linked to climate change, continue to put pressure on Hanoi's drainage network, contributing to recurrent flooding in parts of the capital.
