The system has been integrated into the city’s existing public bike network since March 15, marking a step towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly urban mobility.
According to the Public Transport Management Centre under the municipal Department of Construction, operator Tri Nam Company is offering free trial rides from 4 pm on March 15 to March 31 at the Tax Trade Centre station in Sai Gon Ward.
The compact e-bikes, designed for short inner-city trips, have a top speed of around 25 kilometres per hour.
Each bike is equipped with a helmet stored in a front basket, secured with an electronic lock that users can access via a mobile app.
Authorities hope the scheme will encourage greener travel habits as the city works to expand public transport and curb private vehicle use.
Nguyen Le Hong Thu, a local resident, said the service was convenient for sightseeing and urban travel while also helping reduce emissions.
However, users pointed to several shortcomings, including discomfort for taller riders, weak headlights, a lack of turn signals and limited shelter at docking stations, leaving bikes exposed to the elements.
The transport centre said it would monitor operations and demand before expanding the service. After the trial period, fares are expected to be set at VND 10,000 (about USD 0.39) for 15 minutes, VND 20,000 for 30 minutes, VND 35,000 for 60 minutes, VND 60,000 for 120 minutes and VND 110,000 for 240 minutes, subject to adjustment.
