Vietnam has a new crop of professors, among them a 38-year-old lecturer from the HCM City University of Technology and an 81-year-old from the National University of Art Education.
The State Council for Professorial Titles announced 59 new professors and associated professors from among 820 candidates.
Council secretary Tran Van Nhung said it as the highest number of applications in several years.
Notable among the appointments was 38-year-old Phan Thanh Son Nam, head of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering at HCM City University of Technology.

Phan Thanh Son Nam
Nam was born and raised in Xuyen Moc District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. He graduated from HCM City University of Technology and successfully defended his doctoral degree thesis at Sheffield University in the UK in 2004. He continued postdoctoral study at Georgia University in the US in 2006.
Nam has published various articles in peer-reviewed international journals, books and written several scientific reports.
As the head of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, he has guided many students to high achievement in both domestic and international competitions.
The titles will be officially conferred at a ceremony at the end of the month.
Among others to appointed professor was 81-year-old Le Ngoc Canh, lecturer at the National University of Art Education.
