The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (Vietnam MRCC) said it worked with relevant agencies to evacuate the injured man from the MS Westerdam, a Netherlands-flagged vessel carrying 1,900 passengers and travelling from Quang Ninh to Tien Sa Port in Danang.

At about 2.18 am on December 11, when the ship was 32 nautical miles northeast of Son Tra Peninsula, the 69-year-old passenger slipped on a staircase, suffering a splenic injury and suspected internal bleeding.
The ship’s doctor provided first aid, but his condition deteriorated, prompting the captain to request urgent rescue assistance.
Upon receiving the distress call, Vietnam MRCC instructed the Westerdam to head at full speed towards Danang for immediate medical evacuation.
The vessel docked safely at Tien Sa Port at around 4.30 am, where rescue teams transferred the patient to hospital for emergency treatment.
